Category 3 Rail Medical (CAT 3)

A Category 3 Rail Medical, often referred to as a CAT 3 Medical, is an assessment designed to help non-safety critical workers make sure their health and fitness does not impact the rail network. The CAT 3 Medical tests your ability to operate safely in the rail corridor so you can hear instructions, move to a safe place, and maintain an awareness of your surroundings. It focusses primarily on medical conditions which could impact on your ability to detect and react quickly to an oncoming train or warnings.

Completion of the Cat 3 medical is the minimum requirement to obtain a Rail Industry Workers (RIW) Card or a Rail Industry Standard Induction (RISI) Card and takes 30 minutes.

What is included in a CAT 3 Rail Medical:

The Category 3 rail medical is the minimum requirement for working within the rail corridor. This medical includes the following assessments:

• Hearing (up to 2000 Hz)
• Vision
• Mobility
• Drug and Alcohol screen

How long is a CAT 3 Rail Medical valid for?

Category 3 Rail medicals are valid from the date of commencement to:
• Up until the age 40
• Aged 40+: Require renewal every 5 years

Category 3 rail workers who have had a full health assessment less than 5 years before turning 40 (e.g. for pre-employment) may have their next periodic assessments scheduled 5 years from that date.
