NSW ARTC Protection Officer Level 2

Designed for workers who want a career as a Protection Officer Level 2, during this course you will gain the skills to protect worksites and workers in the ARTC rail network in NSW using a Track Occupancy Authority (TOA). This course will detail the rules and procedures for using the Pilot Staff Working and Train Order Working using and compiling Track Occupancy Authority (TOA) methods of worksite protection.

The following topics are covered within this course:

  • Identify and obtain relevant ARTC Network information
  • Describe the general requirement of a TOA and complete relevent documentation
  • Define yard limits in rail vehicle detection system territory, train staff and ticket territory, and train order territory
  • Manage a TOA when there are joint occupancies
  • Understand Protection Officer’s responsibilities during TOA working
  • Pilot a work train or track vehicles within the limits of a TOA
  • Follow the correct procedure to compile an Infrastructure Booking Authority (IBA) form
  • Identify protection requirements for multiple worksites
  • Follow the correct procedure for placing and removing protection
  • Describe how to fulfil the authority

The pre-requisites for this course are as follows:

  • ARTC NSW Protection Officer Level 1

Language Literacy and Numeracy (LL&N)

Participants will undergo an LL&N assessment at the commencement of the course. This course requires participants to have LL&N levels to be able to:

  • Read and understand work safety signs and symbols
  • Read and understand workplace policies and procedures
  • Communicate identified hazards

Assessment

__________________

  • Theory assessment (in class)
  • On job workbook – this needs to be signed off by an already qualified Protection Officer level 1-4. You must be able to provide evidence from the person (must hold at least the minimum qualification of those being signed off) who has signed
  • Practical assessment – conducted one on one with a CERT assessor (at completion of on job workbook)

Medical Requirement

Category 1 Rail Medical (CAT 1)

This is the highest level of rail medical available and is for rail workers or contractors undertaking a safety critical role requiring a high level of attentiveness to their tasks and where sudden incapacity may result in a serious incident affecting the public or the rail network.
