NSW Track Machine Operator – Medium/Heavy Vehicle
Track Machine Operator Medium/Heavy will provide you with the skills and knowledge to travel a medium or heavy (over 10tonne) self-propelled track vehicle on a rail network in accordance with the network owner’s policies and procedures. While the units of competency provided in this course are nationally recognised by most railways in Australia, additional operator-specific inductions and training may need to be completed before operating a Hi-Rail on individual rail networks

Upon successful completion of all assessments, students will receive:

Statement of Attainment (Nationally Recognised)
  • TLIC3045 Operate Road/Rail Vehicle 
  • TLIC2054 Access rail track to run track vehicle within defined worksite
  • TLIC2058 Travel medium or heavy self-propelled on-track equipment

  • Perform pre-operational equipment checks
  • On track processes and operating the road/rail vehicle
  • Off track processes
  • Perform post-operational equipment procedures
  • Obtain appropriate authority to travel
  • Complete documentation as required by legislation and organisation

Entry Requirements

The pre-requisites for this course are as follows:

  • CPCCWHS1001 Work safely in the construction industry
  • TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor
  • TLIB0012 Maintain and use hand tools
  • TLID0020 Shift materials safely using manual handling methods
  • TLIE1003 Participate in basic workplace communications
  • TLIF0025 Follow occupational health and safety procedures
  • TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies
  • TLIB2085 Apply track fundamentals
  • TLIU2008 Apply environmental procedures to rail infrastructure

Language Literacy and Numeracy (LL&N)

Participants will undergo an LL&N assessment at the commencement of the course. This course requires participants to have LL&N levels to be able to:

  • Read and understand work safety signs and symbols
  • Read and understand workplace policies and procedures
  • Communicate identified hazards

Assessment

__________________

  • Theory Assessment (closed book, conducted in-class)
  • Practical Assessment conducted on a Hi-Rail Vehicle which is supplied by the client

Delivery Method

  • This course is facilitated face to face and includes both a Theory and Practical Assessment
  • The Practical Assessment must be inclusive of practical assessment on a Hi-Rail Vehicle. Participants can be assessed on CERT premises in full if the appropriate vehicle is provided on the day.

Medical Requirement

Category 1 Rail Medical (CAT 1)

This is the highest level of rail medical available and is for rail workers or contractors undertaking a safety critical role requiring a high level of attentiveness to their tasks and where sudden incapacity may result in a serious incident affecting the public or the rail network.
