CERT and CMS have partnered for several years to provide Category 3 Rail Medicals, but we are pleased to advise that this has now been expanded to include Category 1 Rail Medicals as well as pre-employment and other services. CMS are an Authorised ARA Health Professional.
Category 1 Rail Medical
Category 1 workers are the highest-level of Safety Critical Worker. These are workers who require a high level of attentiveness to the tasks they are completing and for whom sudden incapacity or collapse may result in serious incident, affecting the public or the rail network.
This medical includes:
- K10 Questionnaire for Psychological Health
- Epworth Sleepiness Scale
- Alcohol AUDIT Questionnaire for alcohol use
- Hearing Assessment up to 3000Hz
- Vision Assessment
- General Health Assessment & Questionnaire
- The medical also includes a Drug & Alcohol screen (breath and urine analysis).
Medicals incorporate coronary risk analysis, so workers will need to have an ECG (heart check) and blood test (for cholesterol and glucose). A request form will be sent out so these tests are completed prior to the appointment. The workers will also need to fast before undertaking a pathology test and one week’s notice is required for booking.
Category 1 Rail Medicals are valid from time of commencement then:
Every 5 years to age 50;
Every 2 years to age 60;
Every year over age 60.
Category 3 Rail Medical
Workers in this category are also known as non-safety critical workers. Often referred to as Around the Track Personnel, these workers are responsible for their own safety and the safety of fellow workers. A medical assessment will check the ability of a worker to walk in the rail corridor, work under supervision and identify and move to a safe place.
The Category 3 Rail Medical is the minimum requirement to work within the Rail Corridor.
This medical includes an assessment of:
- Hearing (up to 2000 Hz)
- The medical also includes a Drug & Alcohol screen.
This medical is valid from the date of the issue until the employee reaches 40 years of age. After the age of 40, a medical renewal is required every 5 years.
Medicals are available in every State and can be completed on site if there are sufficient numbers.
