Course Details




This course involves the skills and knowledge required to weld rail using the aluminothermic welding process, heat and cut materials using oxy-LPG equipment, and grind rail and welds in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures.

It includes determining job requirements,preparing and planning the welding method,setting up and testing the equipment,preparing the rail for aluminothermic welding, carrying out the welding process, checking weld conformance, completing required documentation,heating and cutting materials, grinding rail to repair surface defects, shutting down equipment and completing clean-up activities.



Upon successful completion of all assessments, students will receive:

Statement of Attainment (Nationally Recognised) 

  • TLIW3035 - Heat and cut materials using oxy-LPG equipment for the rail industry
  • TLIW3015 - Weld rail using aluminothermic welding process
  • TLIW2012 - Grind rails


The following topics are covered within this course:

  • applying grinding techniques to achieve rail profile and surface condition
  • knowledge of accepted rail industry standards for rail profile and surface condition
  • identifying job requirements

Entry Requirements

Including Language Literacy and Numeracy (LL&N):

Participants will undergo an LL&N assessment at the commencement of the course.  This course requires participants to have LL&N levels to be able to:
  • Read and understand work safety signs and symbols
  • Read and understand workplace policies and procedures
  • Communicate identified hazards

Assessment Methods

The following assessment methods are used within this course:

  • Theory assessment
  • Log Book (evidence of 10 ultrasonically tested welds)
  • Practical demonstration
