NSW ARTC Handsignaller Level 1 & Level 2

Overview

This course is designed to cover managing track vehicle movements‚ the rules and procedures for using track vehicle movement instructions, rail vehicle detection systems and special working requirements.

Upon successful completion of all assessments, students will receive:

Statement of Attainment (Nationally Recognised)

  • TLIF2081 Perform lookout duties
  • TLIF2082 Perform handsignaller duties
  • TLIC2081 Pilot rail traffic within work on track authority limits
  • TLIW2001 Operate under track protection rules
  • TLIW2037 Clip and secure points
  • TLIF2097 Use audible track warning devices

 Certificate of Achievement 

  • ARTC NSW Handsignaller Level 1
  • ARTC NSW Handsignaller Level 2
Note: The above are issued after ALL assessments have been completed (Refer to Assessment Methods to view all assessments within this course)

 

Topics

The following topics are covered within this course:

  • LEVEL 1:
  • Act as a lookout
  • Act as an inner or outer handsignaller
  • Hand signal rail traffic at a worksite or within a possession
  • --------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • LEVEL 2:
  • Act as an inner or outer handsignaller at a fixed signal
  • Act as a handsignaller at defective signals
  • Pilot rail traffic into, within and out of a possession area
  • Hand signal at level crossings

Entry Requirements

Including Language Literacy and Numeracy (LL&N):

Participants will undergo an LL&N assessment at the commencement of the course. This course requires participants to have LL&N levels to be able to:

  • Read and understand work safety signs and symbols
  • Read and understand workplace policies and procedures
  • Communicate identified hazards and necessary instructions
Participants must also:

  • hold current Category 1 rail medical
  • provide 100 points of identification on the day of the course
  • must hold:
    • TfNSW SX52 Accessing the Rail Corridor or
    • ARTC National Track Safety Awareness (NTSA)

Assessment Methods

The following assessment methods are used within this course:

  • Theory assessment (in class)
  • On job workbook - this needs to be signed off by an already qualified Protection Officer level 1-4. You must be able to provide evidence from the person (must hold at least the minimum qualification of those being signed off) who has signed
  • Practical assessment - conducted one on one with a CERT assessor (at completion of on job workbook)
  • NB: If you are required to work within the Transport for NSW (TfNSW) Network, you will need to sit the competency assessment with the Transport for NSW Training College. Upon successful completion TfNSW will issue a Statement of Certification

Delivery Method

  • Level 1 and Level 2 are combined as a face to face workshop (three days) and then on the job training at participants workplace

Recertification

The ARTC Certificate of Achievement is valid for two (2) years from date of issue.
