Our NSW Rail Labourer course is a general qualification for personnel engaged in basic operations within the rail infrastructure environment who undertake a range of tasks involving known routines and procedures.
This program will provide students with the skills to fill the role as a generic Rail Labourer. This role is for individuals working in the danger zone on or about the track performing general labouring duties’ working under the supervision of specific Track Worker Roles like Track Maintainers.

Upon successful completion of all assessments, a Statement of Attainment (Nationally Recognised) will be issued for the following units:
- TLIB0012 Maintain and use hand tools
- TLID0020 Shift materials safely using manual handling methods
- TLIE1003 Participate in basic workplace communication
- TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor
- TLIF0025 Follow work health and safety procedures
- TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies
- TLIU2008 Apply environmental procedures to rail infrastructure

- Applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
- Applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures
- Communicating and working effectively with others
- Completing relevant documentation
- Using at least three different types of hand tools and related materials or equipment safely
- Reading, interpreting and following relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs
- Interpreting manual handling risks
- Operating and adapting to differences in loads and products, goods or materials in accordance with workplace procedures
- Selecting and using required personal protective equipment (PPE) conforming to industry and WHS/OHS standards
- Working collaboratively with others when manually lifting and handling products, goods or materials
- Modifying communication activities depending on operational contingencies and environments
- Operating electronic communications equipment to required protocol
- Reporting and/or rectifying identified problems in communication promptly, in accordance with workplace procedures
- Responding appropriately to cultural preferences in the workplace, including modes of behaviour and interactions with others
- Reporting identified problems, faults or malfunctions in accordance with relevant legislation and workplace policies and procedures
- Identifying job hazards and taking required actions to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
- Following routine service and maintenance procedures for equipment and vehicles
- Implementing contingency plans
- Adapting to changes in rosters and standard operating procedures (SOPs) as they relate to fatigue management
- Adjusting lifestyle patterns to ensure effective fatigue management during work activities
- Applying precautions and required actions to minimise and control the effects of fatigue when carrying out own work functions
- Communicating effectively with others when applying fatigue management strategies
- Identifying and meeting own learning needs about fatigue management related matters
- Modifying activities and taking appropriate initiatives to manage fatigue in the workplace depending on work contexts, risk situations and environments
- Take appropriate safety precautions to access the rail corridor and danger zone
- Take appropriate action in an emergency
