The Rail Operations Fundamentals Skill Set will provide you with a pathway to the Certificate IV in Train Driving.

This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to enter the rail corridor, apply fatigue management strategies, use communications, apply effective safety critical communications, follow work health and safety procures and develop an awareness of railway fundamentals such as track, trackside equipment, fixed structures, rolling stock and rail vehicles.

This training initiative has been designed for individuals with no prior rail industry experience to gain essential knowledge and skills in rail operations. Successfully completing this course will equip you with the skills and understanding to pursue a career in rail operations by providing foundational training that can count towards the skill sets required for a multitude of different rail operations careers, such as Train Driving, Terminal Operator, Yard Coordinator and Station Officer.*ย

Upon successful completion of all assessments, a Statement of Attainment (Nationally Recognised) will be issued for the following units:

  • TLIB3118 Apply awareness of railway fundamentals 
  • TLIE2007 Use communication systems 
  • TLIF0008 Apply safety critical communications in the rail environment 
  • TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor
  • TLIF0025 Follow work health and safety procedures 
  • TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies
  • TLIG0003 Work effectively with others in a team

  • Identify overhead and/or electrical components
  • Identify rail track vehicles and rolling stock
  • Communicate using communications technology
  • Maintain communications equipment operational status

  • Issue and coordinate rail operations information
  • Take appropriate action in an emergency
  • Take appropriate safety precautions to access the rail corridor
  • Take appropriate safety precautions to access the danger zone
  • Follow workplace procedures for hazard identification and risk control

  • Category 1 Rail Medical 

Language Literacy and Numeracy (LL&N)

Participants undergo an assessment prior to commencement of training which assists us to identify any learning support which may be required. This course requires participants to have language, literacy and numeracy skill levels to be able to:

  • Read and understand work safety signs and symbols
  • Read and understand workplace policies, procedures and information
  • Understand basic spoken English
  • Communicate basic safety-related information

Medical Requirement

CAT 1 Medical

This is the highest level of rail medical available and is for rail workers or contractors undertaking a safety critical role requiring a high level of attentiveness to their tasks and where sudden incapacity may result in a serious incident affecting the public or the rail network.
