This specialised off-job training course is designed to provide participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to ensure the safety of workers and worksites on the UGL NSW Regional Linx Rail Network.

With a strong focus on safe practices within the rail corridor, the course covers critical protection methods, including:

Work In Corridor (WIC)

Lookout Working (LOW)

Siding Protection

Route Control Blocking (RCB) Authority

Training is delivered through a blend of classroom-based theory and hands-on scenario-based learning, enabling participants to confidently apply protection strategies that meet both safety requirements and UGL NSW Regional Linx compliance standards.

Upon successful completion of all assessments, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for the following units:

  • TLIF0027 Perform lookout duties
  • TLIF0023 Conduct track assessment
  • TLIL3082 Implement absolute signal blocking

  • TLIW2037 Clip and secure points
  • TLIF2097 Use audible track warning devices

The following topics are covered within this course:

  • TLIF0027 Perform lookout duties: Focuses on preparing for and conducting lookout duties in rail environments, ensuring the safety of workers by monitoring for approaching trains and responding appropriately to emergencies to maintain safe worksites.
  • TLIF0023 Conduct track protection assessment: Involves assessing worksite protection needs, identifying risks, and selecting appropriate safeworking methods to ensure adequate protection for workers during rail infrastructure activities.
  • TLIF2097 Use audible track warning devices: Covers the correct use, placement, and handling of audible track warning devices to provide early warnings to train crews and rail workers about track hazards, obstructions, or work activities requiring protection.
  • TLIL3082 Implement safe working systems (absolute signal blocking): Provides the skills and knowledge to implement absolute signal blocking protection, communicate with network control officers, and manage the safety of workgroups on tracks according to relevant procedures.
  • TLIW0007 Operate under track protection rules: Details procedures for working under established track protection rules in rail corridors, including interpreting protection requirements and applying correct rules and responses for safety-critical operations.
  • TLIW2037 Clip and secure points: Teaches the safe clipping and securing of rail points using proper tools and procedures, enabling correct and secure movement or isolation of rail tracks as required during maintenance or operational work.

Entry Requirements

The pre-requisites for this course are as follows:
  • TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor
  • CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry

Language Literacy and Numeracy (LL&N)

Participants undergo an assessment prior to commencement of training which assists us to identify any learning support which may be required. This course requires participants to have language, literacy and numeracy skill levels to be able to:

  • Read and understand work safety signs and symbols
  • Read and understand workplace policies, procedures and information
  • Understand basic spoken English
  • Communicate basic safety-related information

Delivery Method

  • Face to face workshop (two days) and then on the job training

Recertification

_________________________

  • The UGL Regional Linx Certificate of Achievement is valid for two (2) years from date of issue. 
  • Recertification is required every two (2) years from the date of assessment.
  • Recertification takes four (4) hours and can be scheduled as required.

Medical Requirement

CAT 3 Medical

A Category 3 Medical is an assessment designed to help non-safety critical workers make sure their health and fitness does not impact the rail network. The CAT 3 Medical tests your ability to operate safely in the rail corridor so you can hear instructions, move to a safe place, and maintain an awareness of your surroundings.
