Track Vehicle Operations (TMO) Hi Rail
TMO
1 day
$850.00
- Short answer knowledge assessment, incorporating gap fill, multiple choice and short response tasks.
- Practical observation and explanations.
- Demonstrations and explanations in a simulated work environment.
Who this is for
Employed rail workers who operate or support the operation of hi-rail / on-track vehicles as part of maintenance, inspection or project works—e.g. plant operators, maintainers, drivers and structures/track crews requiring on-track access within defined worksites.
Purpose
To develop competent, safety-focused operators who can prepare, on-track, run and off-track road/rail and light on-track equipment in accordance with network safeworking rules, site procedures and regulatory requirements—minimising possession risk and supporting reliable work delivery.
What the program covers (aligned to the listed units)
- Pre-operational & post-operational checks: vehicle condition, safety systems, documentation, permits and work pack review.
- On-track approvals & communications: obtain authority to enter the corridor, coordinate with protection personnel and traffic management.
- On-tracking and off-tracking: correct set-up, transition to rail mode, clearance, stabling and isolation.
- Operating within a defined worksite: speed, separation, signalling interfaces, lookout protocols and emergency response.
- Operating light and heavy on-track equipment (within role scope): manoeuvring, positioning for tasks, worksite hazard control, environmental and quality requirements.
- Records & hand-back: logs, defect reports and network documentation.
How it’s delivered
Workplace-integrated training using employer plant, processes and work fronts where practicable, supported by targeted simulations for rare or high-risk scenarios. Assessment combines direct observation, practical tasks, questioning and third-party supervisor reports to demonstrate safe, consistent performance over time.
Outcomes
Graduates can safely:
- prepare and check vehicles/equipment for track operations
- obtain and comply with on-track authorities
- on-track, run and off-track hi-rail/on-track vehicles within a defined worksite
- complete required records and hand-back to network standards
