Pathways
Completion of TLIF0020 – Safely access the rail corridor contributes toward, and is a recognised unit within, the following nationally recognised qualifications:
- TLI27121 – Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure, a foundational qualification for those working in track construction and maintenance roles, where TLIF0020 is packaged as a specialist elective unit.
- TLI42622 – Certificate IV in Train Driving, a qualification for those pursuing a career as a train driver, where TLIF0020 is packaged as a core unit alongside other train driving competencies.

- Demonstrate how to safely access and work in the rail corridor
- Recognise the danger zone
- Identify and access a safe place
- Identify the direction of approaching traffic
- Apply minimum sighting distances
- Maintain situational awareness to identify potential risks
- Identify and explain the use of communication tools when working in the rail environment
- Identify electrical safety hazards, risks and controls used in the rail corridor
- Identify and report unsafe situations within the rail environment
- Undertake work activities under local track protection rules in accordance with safeworking rules, procedures and regulatory requirements
Entry Requirements

Language Literacy and Numeracy (LL&N)

Participants will undergo a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LL&N) assessment at the commencement of the course. This course requires participants to have LL&N levels sufficient to:
- Read and understand work safety signs and symbols
- Read and understand workplace policies and procedures
- Communicate identified hazards
Before entering the rail corridor, participants will also need to complete a Category 3 Rail Medical Assessment, arranged through an independent third-party provider. This assessment checks that participants meet the physical and health requirements needed to work safely in the rail environment, which may include:
- A general health and medical history review
- Vision and hearing checks
- An assessment of fitness for the physical demands of the role
- Drug and alcohol testing

Medical Requirement
CAT 3 Medical
A Category 3 Medical is an assessment designed to help non-safety critical workers make sure their health and fitness does not impact the rail network. The CAT 3 Medical tests your ability to operate safely in the rail corridor so you can hear instructions, move to a safe place, and maintain an awareness of your surroundings.
