What Does Rail Operations Mean?
Rail Operations is a category of job roles that manage the day-to-day running of the railway. Colloquially this is referred to as ‘above rail’ and incorporates all jobs that are associated with moving and managing rollingstock.
Rail Operations encompasses the planning, staffing, movement and control of trains both in the rail yard and rail corridor. Roles in this area of rail are heavily focused on safety, effective communications, protecting assets and the environment. Positions need to be familiar with commonly used rail terms as well as understand the rules and requirements for operating the railway.

Thanks to NSW Government Smart and Skilled funding, eligible students can access training and fee subsidies which make this course fee-free and fully subsidised. Please be aware students may incur additional costs for any medicals, police checks or Rail Industry Worker card requirements to enter the rail industry which will need to be paid by the student.

What are the Entry Requirements:
The role of a Train Driver is considered a safety critical position and requires that students have a current Category 1 Rail Medical and a current/valid National Police Check.
You must also have the right to live and work in Australia.
What Should I Expect During Training?
- This course will run full-time for 6-days at a training facility in Dubbo.
- Training is delivered face-to-face by one of our highly experienced, supportive rail trainers.
- This course includes both theory and practical learning, ensuring you can apply your newfound knowledge to real-world scenarios.
- You will demonstrate your knowledge through an in-person practical assessment.
Language Literacy and Numeracy Requirements:
Participants undergo an assessment prior to commencement of training which assists us to identify any learning support which may be required. This course requires participants to have language, literacy and numeracy skill levels to be able to:
- Read and understand work safety signs and symbols
- Read and understand workplace policies, procedures and information
- Understand basic spoken English
- Communicate basic safety-related information
What Certification will I Receive?
Upon successful completion of all assessments, a Statement of Attainment (Nationally Recognised) will be issued for the following units:
- TLIB3118 – Apply awareness of railway fundamentals
- TLIF0008 – Apply safety critical communications in the rail environment
- TLIF0020 – Safely access the rail corridor
- TLIF0025 – Follow work health and safety procedures
- TLIF2010 – Apply fatigue management strategies
- TLIG0003 – Work effectively with others in a team
^This course will provide you with credits towards qualifications in range of Rail Operations careers such as Train Driving, Terminal Operator, Yard Coordinator and more. Credits applied may vary.
