What is an Introduction to Rail Operations course?

 

This training initiative has been designed to support individuals with no prior rail industry experience to gain a specific skill set to boost employment opportunities in rail operations.  The program is also able to support existing rail industry workers who wish to follow a new career path.

This course has been designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge required to enter the rail corridor, apply fatigue management strategies, use communications, apply effective safety critical communications, follow work health and safety procures and develop an awareness of railway fundamentals such as track, trackside equipment, fixed structures, rolling stock and rail vehicles.

The TLISS00224 Rail Operations Fundamentals Skill Set is a foundational course for anyone interested in pursuing careers in train driving, terminal operating, yard, or signaller roles. This course is a Nationally recognised qualification that covers vital competencies required for work in the rail industry.

What is a Rail Operations Career?

Rail Operations is a category of job roles that manage the day-to-day running of the railway such as the movement, planning and control of trains in the rail yard and the rail corridor. Rail Operations careers can vary considerably, but include Yard Coordinator, Terminal Operator, Train Driver and many other positions.

A Train Driver, for example, works with staff across the entire rail network performing general rail duties as needed for the safety and operation of locomotives including communications with Network Control.

Prioritising rail safety is an important part of the role. Train Drivers undertake rail communications and learn how to operate trains. They also perform general rail duties as needed for the safety and operation of locomotives.

The freight train rail environment operates 24/7 and therefore offers flexibility with working hours post completion of the training. Hours of work available for train driving, shunting and terminal operations include early morning, afternoon, or night shifts, as well as weekends and public holidays.

FAQs

What are the Entry Requirements:

The role of a Train Driver is considered a safety critical position and requires that students have a current Category 1 Rail Medical 

The minimum requirement to enter the rail industry is a Category 3 Rail Medical. Different rail medicals apply for different jobs. Details of the rail medicals can be found here.

We recommend all students undertake a Category 1 Rail Medical prior to completing this course.

You must also have the right to live and work in Australia.

What Should I Expect During Training?

  • This course will run full-time for 3 consecutive days at a one of our training facilities.
  • Training is delivered via a pre-course activity workbook before you undertake face-to-face training by one of our highly experienced, supportive rail trainers.
  • This course includes both theory and practical learning, ensuring you can apply your newfound knowledge to real-world scenarios.
  • You will demonstrate your knowledge through an in-person practical assessment.

Language Literacy and Numeracy Requirements:

Participants undergo an assessment prior to commencement of training which assists us to identify any learning support which may be required. This course requires participants to have language, literacy and numeracy skill levels to be able to:

  • Read and understand work safety signs and symbols
  • Read and understand workplace policies, procedures and information
  • Understand basic spoken English
  • Communicate basic safety-related information
