This course provides an overview of the mechanisms and factors that contribute to derailments, and advice on how to collect, inspect and interpret evidence.
Investigating a derailment is a complex process. Investigations must be conducted in a structured and thorough manner to correctly identify the causes of derailment and the contributing factors that led to the derailment.

This 3-day course is facilitator-led and relies heavily on class interaction and participation, sharing your experiences and knowledge about derailments and gaining insights from other participants. The course is delivered using the following methods:
- Discussion and analysis of ATSB case studies
- Brain storming/break out groups
- Open discussion/question and answer sessions
- Knowledge assessment
- Practical on-site assessment (where available)
- Post course assessment (up to 8-16 hours)
Certificates

Participants who successfully complete all assessment activities including post course work will receive a Statement of Attainment for the nationally recognised unit of competency TLIF5023 Undertake a derailment investigation issued by CERT.
Language Literacy and Numeracy (LL&N)

Participants undergo an assessment prior to commencement of training which assists us to identify any learning support which may be required. This course requires participants to have language, literacy and numeracy skill levels to be able to:
- Read and understand work safety signs and symbols
- Read and understand workplace policies, procedures and information
- Understand basic spoken English
- Communicate basic safety-related information
